I’ve been an artist since I can remember. I’ve taken very few art classes & always drew with pencil and colored pencil & in college took 1 class on portraits. Portraits are the hardest things to draw and I can get easily frustrated. Also, it takes a lot of energy for me to do a portrait, and a full color one can take me all day and I’m oftentimes exhausted for a few days afterwards. If I don’t know the person it’s even that much more difficult. I like to put the person’s personality into the picture. As a result, I don’t do many portraits anymore.
I’ve never experimented with different media until the last few years. I’m not sure why I thought I was only one type of artist but I’m so glad I’ve been brave lately. I’ve done poems, photographs, collages and I’ve got a whole list of new media I want to experiment with. I thought of this one today. I have boxes of crayons and canvases I’ve never gotten around to using. So I took an iron, hair dryer (because who needs a hair dryer when you’ve got braids right?), a mallet, a brush & brown paper bags. As an artist of many form, I never try to force the creation. It’s a conversation between and the media & I let it speak to me and evolve the way it was meant to. 1 1/2 hours later……I have two collections, 3 pieces each. A few of them have quite a bit of 3 dimensional quality to them & I took extra pics of those to illustrate that. I hope you enjoy!!
